Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions parents make. The school you pick for Nursery or Class 1 often becomes your child’s second home for the next ten to fifteen years. With admissions for 2027-28 already open in many Ludhiana schools, here is a practical checklist to help you compare schools calmly and choose with confidence.

Start with your family’s priorities

Before you visit any school, sit down together and write your top five priorities. For some families it is distance and safety. For others it is a strong English foundation, sports, or a school that will continue up to Class 12 so the child does not have to change schools later. A short list like this keeps you focused when every school brochure starts to look the same.

The 2027-28 school checklist

1. Learning approach

  • Is the curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), with play and activity in the early years?
  • Do children learn by doing, through projects, experiments and discussions, or mainly by copying from the board?
  • How does the school track progress beyond test marks?

2. Teachers and class size

  • How many children are in one class, and how many teachers or helpers are there in the early years?
  • What training do teachers receive, and how often?
  • Can you meet the teachers or the principal during your visit?

3. Safety and care

  • Is the campus secure, with controlled entry and CCTV in common areas?
  • Is there a nurse or infirmary on campus during school hours?
  • Do school buses have GPS, CCTV and a female attendant?
  • Are the school’s child protection and POSH policies published and easy to read?

4. Beyond academics

  • Are sports, arts, music and clubs part of the timetable for every child, not only the “talented” few?
  • What facilities can you actually see on campus: playgrounds, labs, art rooms, a sports field?
  • Does the school build life skills such as communication, teamwork and money sense?

5. Continuity up to Class 12

Changing schools after Class 5 or Class 8 can be hard on children. Ask whether the school plans to go all the way to Class 12, and how it will add senior classes over the coming years. A K-12 school gives your child one stable community from Nursery to the board exams.

6. Board and affiliation

Ask which board the school follows or is applying to, and check the school’s mandatory public disclosure on its website. For a new school, ask where it is in the affiliation process and what the expected timeline is.

7. Communication with parents

  • How often are parent-teacher meetings held?
  • Is there an app, diary or WhatsApp group for daily updates?
  • Can parents take part in events, workshops or feedback circles?

8. Distance, timings and transport

A long daily commute tires young children quickly. Check the route, the pickup time for your area and the school timings. A school within a reasonable distance, with safe transport, makes every day easier for the whole family.

9. Fees and what they include

  • Ask for the full fee structure in writing: admission, annual, tuition, transport and any other charges.
  • Check what is included, such as books, uniforms, activities and meals.
  • Ask how often fees are revised.

10. Admission process and dates

Note the registration dates, the documents needed and how children are assessed. For Nursery to UKG most schools hold a short, friendly interaction with the child and parents. Check the age criteria for each class before you apply.

Visit before you decide

No brochure or website can replace a campus visit. Go on a normal school day if you can, and take your child along. Watch how teachers speak to children, how clean the classrooms and washrooms are, and whether children look happy and busy. Our guide on the 10 questions every parent should ask on a school visit can help you make the most of it.

Many schools open admissions for the next session between September and December. Start shortlisting and visiting schools early, so you are not rushed when registrations close.

How many schools should I visit before deciding?

Three to four visits are usually enough. Use the same checklist at every school so you can compare them fairly.

Which documents are usually needed for Nursery admission?

Most schools ask for the child’s birth certificate, recent photographs, Aadhaar card and address proof. Check each school’s list before the registration date.
